ORR Catalysts Derived from Biopolymers

Due to the limited reaction rate of oxygen reduction (ORR), it is considered as a limiting factor in performance fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Platinum benchmark catalyst for ORR; however, scarcity platinum, its high price, drift phenomenon, insufficient durability, susceptibility gas poisoning are reasons constant search new ORR catalysts. Carbon-based catalysts show exceptional promise this respect considering economic profitability activity, and, addition, they have favorable conductivity often large specific surface area. The use chitin, cellulose, lignin, coconut shell particles, shrimp shells, even hair purpose was reported, had similar electrochemical activity regarding Pt. Alginate, natural polymer constituent brown algae, can be successfully used obtain carbon materials that catalyze ORR. In metal atomic-level N-doped porous materials, obtained from sodium alginate precursor, been proposed efficient electrocatalysts Except alginate, other biopolymers reported play an important role preparation review, recent advances biopolymer-derived summarized, with focus on source.
